Staycation Surprises: Exploring Indiana's Hidden Gems, thanks to Spirit

Embarking on the journey with Spirit Airlines promised budget-friendly travel experiences, but little did I know the rollercoaster ride that awaited me. Join me as I share the highs and lows of my experiences with Spirit, from canceled flights to unexpected adventures in the heart of Indiana.

The Rollercoaster Ride with Spirit

As a traveler seeking cost-effective options, the term "low-cost airline" like Spirit was initially appealing. My first encounter with Spirit Airlines in 2020 was filled with excitement as I planned a trip to Antigua, Guatemala. However, the world had other plans, closing borders and forcing a cancellation. Yet, Spirit issued a credit, igniting hope for a future adventure.

My optimism persisted in 2021 as I planned a meticulously detailed trip to Puerto Rico, fueled by the Spirit credit. Unfortunately, just three days before takeoff, the rollercoaster took a dive – Spirit cited employee shortages and canceled the flight. Amid canceled arrangements, the one thing I couldn't reclaim was my vacation time.

Making the Most of Unexpected Changes

Faced with the unexpected, I decided to turn the setback into an opportunity for spontaneous exploration in my own backyard – Indiana. Here's a glimpse into the unexpected gems I discovered.

Madison, IN

Madison, Indiana, is known for its rich history, well-preserved architecture, and scenic beauty. The town is situated along the Ohio River, providing picturesque riverfront views for some of the most well-kept historic homes I have ever seen. Madison boasts one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States, featuring over 130 blocks of historic architecture, with the Lanier Mansion State Historic Site been my favorite. The town also has a variety of antique shops, if you are interested in vintage finds and unique treasures. Our day trip to Madison offered a blend of history, natural beauty, and cultural experiences, making it a charming destination for.

Newfields, the Indianapolis Art Museum

Shift gears from nature to culture at the Indianapolis Art Museum. The museum has a diverse and extensive collection of art spanning various periods and styles, including European, American, Asian, and African art, as well as contemporary and modern pieces. The museum regularly hosts special exhibitions and installations that highlight specific themes, artists, or movements. The day we visited, the were hosting Van Gogh, the Immersive Experience. In addition to its art collections, Newfields has a beautiful garden and outdoor space. We explored The Garden & Nature Park, and other landscaped areas. So glad to discover the vibrant art scene that Indianapolis has to offer.

Lake Michigan South Shore Beach

Venture north towards Gary, Indiana to visit the Indiana Dunes State Park and where the beauty of Lake Michigan awaits. We were indeed impressed with the majesty of Lake Michigan while experiencing the picturesque waterfront. A unique experience was hiking and climbing the sand dunes and prairie areas, at the Indiana Dunes. The breathtaking scenery, ecological significance, recreational opportunities, and the unique combination of sand dunes and freshwater beaches along Lake Michigan made our trip very special.

While Spirit Airlines may have tested my travel plans, the unexpected journey through Indiana unveiled hidden treasures and unexpected delights. Embrace the twists and turns of travel, finding joy in local destinations even when plans take an unexpected turn. The adventure may not always be what you envisioned, but it's the detours that make the journey memorable.
